If I grasp Lord's Feet, the Treasure of miracles, what sufferings can then befall me?

He alone, in whose power are all the things, is my Lord.

Holding me by the arm, the Lord has blessed me with His Name, and placing His Hand on my forehead He has saved me.

The world-ocean affects me not, for I have quaffed the immortalising elixir of God.

Through the Saints' congregation and the Name's love, I have won the great contest of the world battlefield.

What man does, by day and night, that is recorded on his forehead.

The Creator is with him and watches his deeds. So why should he commit sins?

Do virtuous deeds, repeat the Name, and thou shalt not ever go to hell.

During the eight watches of the day, remember thou God's Name, and it shall go with thee.

The beneficent Lord is ever merciful. Why should we forget Him from our mind?

Join the society of Saints, dauntlessly dwell upon the Lord, and thus shall save thine entire lineage.

The Name is the support of the Siddhas, seekers, gods, silent sages and devotees.
Имя является поддержкой Сиддхов, ищущих Бога, божеств, безмолвных мудрецов и

Prays Nanak, ever meditate thou on the Lord, the sole Creator. |2|

Practise not deception, as the Lord is the Assayer of all.

They, who practise falsehood and deceit, are born again in this world.

They alone, who deliberate over the one Lord, cross the world-ocean.

They abandon lust, wrath, flattery and slander and enter the sanctuary of the Lord.

The lofty, inaccessible and infinite Lord is pervading the sea, the land and the sky.

God, thy companion is ever with thee. Remember Him day and night.

Without one God, there is not any other. Burn thou the love of another.

Deem in thy mind, that the Lord alone is thy friend, thy youth, thy wealth and thine all.

In the dense and awful world-forest - in the dense and awful world-forest, alas!
the thieves are plundering man's house in broad day-light, and night and day are eating up his life.

The days are eating up the life, which is passing away without the Lord. Meet thou, therefore, God - the Lord of mercy.

I passed through so many births and deaths, but without the union with the Beloved, I did not obtain salvation.

Alas! As the mind and body of a fish out of water - a fish out of water - perish
by separation from the water, so do I, how can I live without my Love?

The deer head-on bears the arrow - head-on bears the arrow, and being pierced
through with the soothing tune, he surrenders his soul, body and very life.
Олень встречает стрелу головой – встречает стрелу головой, и, пронизанный
насквозь успокоительной мелодией, он отдаёт свои душу, тело и саму жизнь.
I have enshrined love for my Beloved and to meet Him I have become the
world-renouncer. Accursed is the body, which remains without Him, even for a trice.
Я положил в ковчег любовь к моему Возлюбленному, и, для того чтобы Его
встретить, я отказался от мира. Проклято то тело, которое остаётся без Него
даже на одно мгновение.
My eyelids close not; I am absorbed in the love of my Dear One. My mind, night and day, thinks of the Lord.

Imbued with the Lord of wealth and intoxicated with His Name, I have shed all fear, doubt and duality.

The bumble-bee is humming, the bumble-bee is humming, fascinated with the

любви к лотусу, он запутывается.
The heart of the pied-cuckoo thirsts - the heart of the pied-cuckoo thirsts, its
mind longs for the beautiful cloud drops, drinking which the fever of the pied-cuckoo departs.

страстно желает прекрасных капель из облака, глотая которые, горячка пёстрой

Meet me, O Thou, Destroyer of burning and the Remover of pain. Within my soul and body there is such great love for Thee.

My beauteous, wise and omniscient Lord, with what tongue should I utter Thine praises?

Grasp me by the arm and grant me Thy Name. He, on whom Thou casteth a merciful glance, has his sins erased.

Nanak meditates on God, the Purifier of sinners. Seeing His vision one suffers no hardship. |3|

Keep me who is helpless under Thine protection. I delight to meet Thee and my soul longs for Thee.

My attention is fixed on Thine beautiful body, my attention is fixed on Thine

Thou art to preserve the honour of Thy slaves and beggars.

The Lord, who bestows full honour and destroys anguish, has fulfilled all my desires.

Very auspicious is the day when God embraces me to his bosom and on meeting my Spouse, my couch is adorned.

When Lord, the Enemy of pride, shows mercy and meets me, then all my sins get erased.

There is but one God. True is His Name and creative His personality. He is
without fear, without enmity, immortal in form, unborn and self-illumined. By Guru's grace, He is obtained.

This world is the True Lord's chamber and within it, is the abode of the True One.

Some by His order, He absorbs in Himself, and some by His order, He destroys.
Некоторых, по Своему приказу, Он впитывает в Себя, а других, по Своему приказу,

Some at His pleasure, He withdraws from mammon, and others He causes to abide therein.

This too cannot be said, as to whom He will reclaim.

The false find no place there and they go to hell with blackened faces.

The magicians come in the market place and exhibit a false show.

They wear ear-rings worth lacs of rupees and necklace worth lakhs.

Divine knowledge cannot be found through mere worlds. To explain it, is hard like iron.

There is no benefactor as great as the True Guru. Hear this, all, O ye people.

All the goods of the earth, property, wealth and other things of use, are all entanglements.

The disciples play the music and the preceptors dance.

They move their feet and roll their heads.

Dust flies, flies and falls on their head's hair.

Beholding them the people laugh and go home.

For the sake of bread they beat the time.

That the merciful Master, through His mercy, ferries His slaves across.

The oil-press, the spinning wheel, the quern, the potters wheel,

And many and endless whirlwinds in the desert,

The spinning tops, the churning sticks, the thrashers,

The breathless tumbling of the birds,

And mounted on the stakes the beings are whirled around,

O Nanak, the tumblers are countless and endless.

He, the Lord, swings around the mortals, who are bound in entanglement.

According to the acts performed, everyone dances.

Thy Name is the fearless Lord and by repeating Thy Name man goes not to hell.

The soul and body are all His; the man eats what He gives, and to say ought else is to waste words.

If thou desirest thy good, O man, perform virtuous deeds and feel lowly.

If thou remove the signs of old-age, the old age shall still come to thee in guise of death.
Если ты уберёшь знаки пожилого возраста, пожилой возраст всё равно к тебе придёт

The Muslims praise the Islamic law; they read and reflect upon it.

The Lord's bound servants are those who bind themselves to see the Lord's Vision.
Связанные слуги Господа это те, которые связывают себя для того, чтобы увидеть
Господа.
The Hindus praise the praiseworthy God, when they see in many a Beauteous form.
Индусы хвалят достойного похвалы Бога, когда они видят Прекрасного во многих.
They bathe at holy places, make flower-offerings and spread the perfume before idols.
Они принимают омовения в святых местах, дарят цветы идолам и наливают перед ними
духи.
The Yogis, that there are, meditate on the absolute Lord and name the Creator as unseen.
Йоги, такие какие они есть, медитируют на абсолютного Господа и называют Творца

But to the Lord of formless personality and of the immaculate Name, they give the form of a body.
Но к бесформенной личности Господа и к непорочному Имени, они прикладывают образ

In the minds of the generous, contentment is produced, and they think of giving.
В разуме щедрых, рождается удовлетворение, и они думают о том, чтобы давать
другим.
They give and ask in turn, a thousand times more hereafter and wish the world to honour them.
Они дают и требуют за это в тысячу раз больше в потустороннем мире и желают

The thieves, adulterers, perjurers, evil-doers and sinners –

Like the above, they depart after eating here what they had. Have they thus done any good deed?

There are beings in water, on land, in the worlds and universes, in the germs and microbes.

But the Saints, O Nanak, hunger to praise Thee, O Lord, and the True Name is their mainstay.

In eternal beatitude they abide, day and night, and they are the dust of the feet of the virtuous. |1|

The clay of the Muslim's grave becomes clay for the potter's wheel.

The poor clay burns, burns and weeps, and the fiery coals continually fall upon it.

Without the True Guru none has obtained the Lord; without the True Guru none has obtained the Lord.

In the True Guru, the Lord has placed Himself, and I openly declare and proclaim it.
В Истинного Гуру, Господь поместил Самого Себя, и я это открыто объявляю и

Salvation is obtained for aye, by meeting the True Guru, who has banished worldly attachment from within him.
Спасения можно достичь навеки, встретившись с Истинным Гуру, который изгнал

The excellent idea is this, that one attaches one's mind to the True Lord.
Прекрасная идея такова, что нужно прикрепить свой разум к Истинному Господу.
Like this, one attains the beneficent Lord, the Life of the World. |6|

In pride man comes, in pride he departs.

In pride he is born, in pride he dies.

In pride he earns, in pride he losses.

In pride he becomes true or false.

In pride he reflects on virtue or vice.

In pride he falls in hell or heaven.

In pride he laughs, in pride he weeps.

In pride he is soiled, in pride he is washed off.

In pride he loses status and class.

In pride he is ignorant, in pride he is wise.

He knows not the worth of salvation and emancipation.

In pride he loves mammon, and in pride he is kept in darkness by it.

By taking pride the beings are created.

If ego is stilled, then is the God's Gate seen.
Если же эго останавливается, то мы видим Божьи Ворота.
Without Divine knowledge man prattles, prattles and wrangles.

O Nanak, by Lord's order the destiny is recorded.

As the Lord sees us, so are we seen. |1|

The nature of ego is this, that man goes about his business in pride.

The trammel of ego is this, that man, again and again, enters into existences.

Where is ego born from and by what way is it removed?
Откуда же рождается эго, и как это можно убрать?
This is the Lord's will that on account of ego men wander according to their past acts.
Такова воля Господа, что из-за эго, люди скитаются согласно своим прошлым
дейстиям.
Ego is a chronic disease, but it has also its curing medicine.
Эго – это хроническое заболевание, однако оно также содержит в себе излечивающее
лекарство.
If the Lord bestows His grace, then man acts according to Guru's instruction.
Если Господь дарует Свою милость, тогда человек действует согласно указаниям
Гуру.
Says Nanak, hear, O ye people, in this way the trouble departs. |2|

Only those do the real service who being contented, meditate on God, the Truest of the True.

They place not their foot in sin, do good deeds and practise piety.

They burn the worldly bonds and live on paltry corn and water.

Thou art a great Bestower and ever givest, which increase day by day.

The sources of Creation, egg-born, womb-born, earth-born and sweat-born,

And oceans, mountains and sentient beings; He, the Lord, knows their condition,

O Nanak, having created the beings, the Lord takes care of them all.

The Creator, who has created the world, He takes care of it as well.

He, the Fashioner who fashioned the Universe, cares for it.

Unto Him I bow and offer my reverence; imperishable is His Court.

O Nanak, without the True Name, of what avail is frontal mark of the Hindus and of what a sacred thread? |1|

Lacs of virtues and good actions and lacs of approved charities,
Сотни тысяч добродетелей и хороший действий, и сотни тысяч приемлемых

Lacs of penances at holy places and the practice of the way of Lord's union in the wilderness,
Сотни тысяч раскаяний в святых местах и различные способы практики в глуши ради
союза с Господом,
Lacs of courageous actions and giving up the breath of life on the field of battle,
Сотни тысяч храбрых действий и смерть на поле сражения,
Lacs of Divine comprehensions and concentrations and lacs of readings of Vedas and recitations of Puranas,
Сотни тысяч Небесных мудростей и сосредоточение, и сотни тысяч перечитываний Вед
и повторение Пуран,
Before the Creator who has made the world and has written our coming and going,
Перед Творцом, который сотворил мир и написал наши приходы и уходы,
O Nanak, all these acts are false. True is the Insignia of His Grace. |2|

Thou alone art the True Lord. The Truth of Truths is pervading everywhere.

He, to whom Thou givest, receives Truth, and he, then, practises Truth.

Truth is obtained by meeting the True Guru, in whose mind the Truth abides.

The fools know not the Truth. Being self-willed, they lose their life.

Man may read and study cart loads of books and he may read and study the entire multitudes of books.

He may read and study books and pit them in boats. He may read and study books and fill pits with them.
Он может читать и изучать книги и нагружать ими корабли. Он может читать и
изучать книги и наполнять ими ямы.
He may read year upon year and may study for all the months, that there are.
Он может читать год за годом и может изучать в течение всех месяцев, которые

He may continue reading for his entire life and study with every breath of his.

O Nanak, only one thing, God's Name is of account and all else is but to prate and prattle in pride. |1|

The more one writes and reads,

The more one burns.

The more he takes to religious garbs, the more discomfort he causes his body.

Endure, O my soul, the result of thine acts.

One, who does not eat the corn, misses out on the taste.

One obtains great pain, in the love of duality.

He who wears not clothes,

Endures calamity, day and night.

How can the sleeping one be awakened without the Guru?

He, who meets the True Guru, attains peace.

The Saints, O Lord, are pleasing to Thy mind. They look beautiful and sing Thine praises at Thy Gate.

O Nanak, they who are destitute of Thy favour, find not shelter at Thine door and wander about.

False is gold, false is silver, and false is the wearer.

False is the body, false is the raiment, and false is peerless beauty.

False is the husband and false is the wife; they mourn and waste away.

Then alone the man is known as true, if the Truth be in his heart.

When the mind is enraptured on hearing the Name, then the mortal obtains the door of salvation.

Then alone is the man deemed to be true, if he knows the true way of life.
Только тогда человека можно считать истинным, если он знает истинный путь жизни.
Preparing the body-field, he puts into it the seed of the Creator.

Then alone is the mortal deemed to be true, when he receives the true instruction.
Только тогда смертного можно считать истинным, когда он получает истинное
наставление.
He shows mercy to living beings and gives something in charity.
Он проявляет милосердие к живым существам и даёт им что-нибудь в милостыню.
Then alone is one knows as true, when he abides in the pilgrimage station of his heart.
Только тогда человека можно назвать истинным, когда он пребывает на станциях
паломничества своего сердца.
He sits and takes instruction from the Guru and abides according to His will.
Он сидит и получает инструкции от Гуру, и живёт согласно Его воле.
Truth is the medicine for all and it removes and washed away the sins.
Истина – это лекарство для всех, и она смывает прочь наши грехи.
Nanak makes supplication unto those, who have Truth in their lap. |2|

For me gift is the dust of Saints feet. If I obtain it, then I shall apply it to my forehead.

As are the deeds we do, so is the fruit which we obtain.

If it is so writ in the beginning, then the man obtains the dust of the feet of those Saints.

For reasons of meagre intellect, we lose the value of service. |10|

There is a famine of Truth; falsehood prevails and the blackness of the Dark Age has made men demons.
Есть недостаток Истины; преобладает лживость, и мрак Тёмного Века сделал людей

They, who have sown the seed of the Name, have departed with honour. How can the broken seed sprout now?
Те, которые посеяли семя Имени, ушли с честью. Как может разломанное семя теперь
расти?
If the seed be whole and there be the proper season, then the seed germinates.
Если семя было бы целым и был подходящий сезон, тогда оно пустило бы ростки.
O Nanak, without treatment, the brand new cloth cannot be dyed.
О Нанак, без обработки, совсем новую ткань невозможно покрасить.
If the treatment of modesty be applied to the body, it is washed white of sins in Lord's fear.
Если бы обработка скромности была приложена к телу, тогда оно, в боязни Господа,
очистилось бы от грехов.
O Nanak, if the man be imbued with the Lord's meditation, then his repute is not false even in the least. |1|
О Нанак, если человек был бы насыщен медитацией Господа, тогда его слава не была
бы фальшивой, даже на чуть-чуть.
1st Guru.

Avarice and sin are the king and the minister; and falsehood is the treasurer.
Алчность и грех – это король и министр, а лживость – казначей.
Lust, the chief advisor, is summoned and consulted, and they all sit together and chalk out evil plans.
Они вызывают главного советника – похоть, и с нею консультируются, и все вместе
садятся состовлять зловещие планы.

Their subjects are blind and without wisdom; they satisfy the official's fire, or greed, with bribe carrion.
Их подданные – слепые и без мудрости; они удовлетворяют огонь чиновника или
жадности, при помощи взятки мертвечины.
The divines dance, play musical instruments and disguise and decorate themselves.
Святые танцуют, играют на музыкальных инструментах и маскируются, и себя
украшают.
They shout aloud and sing of epic poems and heroes tales.
Они громко кричат и поют эпические поэмы и рассказы о героях.
The fools call themselves scholars and with devices and cavils, they love to amass wealth.
Глупцы называют себя обученными и, при помощи разных средств и пустых
возражений, они любят копить богатство.
The virtuous disfigure their meritorious acts by asking for the door of salvation.
Добродетельные обезображивают свои похвальные действия, прося дверь к спасению.
They call themselves celibates, leave their hearth and home, and know not the true way of life.
Они называют себя целомудренными, оставляют свой дом и очаг, и не знают
истинного образа жизни.
Everyone deems himself perfect and none calls himself imperfect.
Каждый считает себя совершенным, и никто не называет себя несовершенным.
If the weight of honour be put onto the scale, then alone, O Nanak, the man appears properly weighed. |2|
Если бы человек положил бы на весы свою честь, то лишь тогда, О Нанак, он
выглядел бы правильно взвешенным.
1st Guru.

Wickedness becomes well known; O Nanak, He, the True Lord, sees everything.
Пороки становятся известными; О Нанак, Он – Истинный Господь, видит всё.
Everyone has taken a jump, but what the Creator does, that alone comes to pass.
Каждый прыгает, однако то, что Творец делает, только то и происходит.
In the next world, caste and power count not; hereafter the mortal has to deal with the new beings.
В последующем мире каста и власть не засчитываются; после смерти смертному
придётся иметь взаимоотношения с новыми существами.
A few, whose honour is of account, they are good. |3|
Некоторые, честь которых засчитывается, они – хорошие.

Only they, whose destiny Thou, O Lord, hast so written from the beginning, meditate on Thee.
Только те, чью судьбу Ты, О Господь, так написал с самого начала, медитируют на
Тебя.
Nothing is in the power of these creatures. Thou hast created the diverse worlds.
Ничего нет во власти этих существ. Ты сотворил различные миры.
Some Thou unitest with Thyself, and some Thou leadest astray from Thee.
Некоторых Ты соединяешь с Самим Собою, а других Ты уводишь от Себя.
Thou art known by the grace of the Guru, through whom Thou revealest Thyself;
Тебя знают по милости Гуру, через которого Ты себя проявляешь;
They are easily absorbed in Thou. |11|

Pain is the medicine and pleasure - the malady, and where there is pleasure, there is no desire for God.
Боль – это лекарство, а удовольствие – болезнь, и где есть удовольствие, там нет
желания Бога.
Thou art the Doer, I can do nothing. Even if I try to do something, it comes to nothing. |1|
Ты – Делающий; я ничего не могу делать. Даже если я и пытаюсь что-то сделать,
ничего не выходит.
Sacrifice am I unto Thee; Thou abide in Thy Creation.
Я отдаю себя Тебе в жертву; Ты пребываешь в Своём Творении.
Thine limit cannot be comprehended. «Pause»
Твои пределы понять невозможно. «Пауза»
Thy light is contained in the creatures, and the creatures are contained in
Thine light. Thou, O mighty inconceivable Lord, art filling all.
Твой свет содержится в существах, а существа содержатся в Твоём свете. Ты, О
могущественный, непостижимый Господь, заполняешь всё.
Thou art the True Lord, and beautiful is Thy praise. He, who hymns it, swims across.
Ты – Истинный Господь, и прекрасны Твои похвалы. Тот, кто их поёт, переплывает
на другую сторону.
Nanak tells the tales of the Creator - what the Lord is to do, that He continues to do. |2|
Нанак рассказывает истории о Творце – то, что Господь должен делать, Он и
продолжает делать.
2nd Guru.
2-ой Гуру.
The way of union with the Lord is the way of Divine knowledge, but with Brahmans, the way is through the Vedas.
Путь союза с Господом – это путь Небесного знания, однако Брахманы считают, что
путь – через Веды.
Khatri's way is the way of bravery; of the Sudras - the way is the service of others.
Путь для Кхатри – это путь храбрости; для Судров – это путь службы другим.
One who knows the secret that the duty of all is one Lord's meditation –
Тот, кто знает секрет, что обязанность всех это медитировать на единственного
Господа –
Nanak is a slave to him, as he who understands this, is himself the immaculate Lord. |3|
Нанак является его рабом, потому что тот, кто это понимает, сам является
непорочным Господом.
2nd Guru.
2-ой Гуру.
The one Lord is the God of all gods, and He is the soul of their godliness.
Единственный Господь – Бог всех божеств, и Он – душа их благочестия.
One who understands the mystery of the soul and the omnipresent Lord,
Тот, кто понимает тайну души и вездесущего Господа,
Nanak is a slave to him, as he himself is the pure Lord. |4|
Нанак – его раб, потому что он сам является непорочным Господом.

As the water remains confined in a pitcher, but the pitcher could not have been formed without water,
Хотя вода и находится в кувшине, однако кувшин невозможно было бы сделать без
воды,
So the mind is restrained by Divine knowledge, but sans the Guru, there can be no Divine knowledge. |5|
Так и разум можно сдержать Небесным знанием, однако без Гуру, Небесного знания
не существует.

If an educated person is the sinner, then an illiterate Saint is not to be punished.
Если образованный человек – грешник, тогда нельзя наказать необразованного
Святого.
As are the deeds a man does, so is the reputation he acquires.
Какие действия человек выполняет, такую репутацию он и зарабатывает.
Play not such a game, which may bring thee defeat on arrival at God's Court.
Не играй в такую игру, которая приведёт тебя к поражению по прибытию во Двор
Бога.
Of the educated and the uneducated the accounts shall be adjudged hereafter.
Счета обоих, образованного и необразованного, будут решены в потустороннем мире.
The head-strong shall be thrashed in the next world. |12|

O Nanak, the soul of the body has one chariot and one charioteer.
О Нанак, душа тела имеет одну колесницу и одного возчика.
They change after every age, and the divines understand this.
Они меняются после каждого века, и святые люди это понимают.
In the Golden Age, contentment is the carriage, and piety - the charioteer in front.
В Золотом Веке удовлетворение – это колесница, а благочестие – возчик.
In the Sliver Age, continence is the carriage, and power - the charioteer in front.
В Серебряном Веке целомудрие – это колесница, а мощь – возчик.
In the Brass Age, penance is the carriage and truth - the charioteer in front.
В Медном Веке раскаяние – это колесница, а истина – возчик.
In the Iron Age, fire is the chariot and falsehood - the charioteer in front. |1|
В Железном же Веке огонь – это колесница, а фальшь – это возчик.

Sama Veda says that the Lord Master is robed in white, and in the Age of Truth everyone desired Truth, dwelt in Truth,
Сàма Веды рассказывают, что Господь Мастер одет в белое, и в Веке Истины каждый
жаждал Истину, размышлял об Истине,
And was absorbed in Truth.
И углублялся в Истину.
The Rig Veda says that God is fully contained everywhere;
Риг Веды рассказывают, что Бог полностью содержится повсюду;
And amongst the deities, the Lord's Name is the most exalted.
И среди божеств, Имя Господа – самое возвышенное.
By uttering the Name, the sins depart,
Произнося Имя, грехи уходят,
And then, O Nanak, man obtains salvation.
А затем, О Нанак, человек обретает спасение.
In the time of Yujar Veda, Kan Krishna of Yadva tribe seduced Chandrawali by force.
Во времена Юджар Веды, Кан Кришна из племя Ядвы силой прельщал Чандравали.
He brought the Elysian tree for his milk-maid and revelled in Bindraban.
Он купил Елисейское дерево для своей доярки и пировал в Биндрабане.
In the Dark Age, Athrava Veda became prominent, and Allah became the Name of God.
В Тёмном Веке стали известными Астрава Веды, и Аллах стало Именем Бога.
Men then took to and wore blue robes and dresses, and Turks and Pathans assumed power.
Люди в то время носили голубую одежду, и турки и пасаны пришли к власти.
The four Vedas were professed to be true.
Было объявлено, что четыре Веды – истинные.
By reading and studying them, one finds four doctrines in them.
Читая и их изучая, мы находим в них четыре доктрины.
When a person cherishes love and meditation of God, abiding in humility,
Когда человек лелеет любовь к Богу и к медитации Бога, и он – смиренный,
It is then, O Nanak, that he obtains salvation. |2|

A sacrifice am I unto the True Guru, by meeting whom the Lord is remembered.

He has taught me and given me the healing ointment of spiritual wisdom, and with these eyes I behold the reality of the world.
Он меня обучил и дал мне целебную мазь духовной мудрости, и этими глазами я вижу

The dealers, who leave their Spouse and attach themselves to another, are drowned.
Торговцы, которые оставляют своего Супруга и прикрепляют себя к другому, тонут.
The True Guru is a boat, but a few there are who realise this.
Истинный Гуру – это судно, однако редко бывают те, которые это реализуют.
Showering His benediction, He ferries them across. |13|

The bombax hepta phylum tree is straight like an arrow; it is very tall and extremely thick.
Шёлково-хлопчатое дерево – прямое как стрела; оно очень высокое и чрезвычайно
густое.
But those several birds, which visit it with hope, depart disappointed.
Но те некоторые птицы, которые к нему с надеждой прилетают, улетают
разочарованными.
Its fruits are insipid; flowers nauseating and leaves useless.
Его плоды – безвкусны; цветы вызывают тошноту, а листья – бесполезны.
Sweetness and humility, O Nanak, is the essence of merits and virtues.
Сладость и смиренность, О Нанак, это эссенция заслуг и добродетели.
Everyone bows down to himself; no one bows down to another.
Все кланяются самим себе; никто не кланяется другому.
When something be placed in the pan of a balance and weighed, the side which descends that is the heavier.
Когда мы что-то кладём на весы, тогда более тяжёлая сторона опускается вниз.
The sinner, like the deer hunter, bows down twice as much.
Грешник, как охотник на оленя, кланяется в два раза больше.
What can be achieved by bowing the head, when the man goes with filthy mind? |1|
Чего человек может достичь, опуская в поклоне голову, когда его разум загрязнён?

You read books, say vesper prayers and then engage in debate;
Ты читаешь книги, произносишь вечерние молитвы, а затем ты занят спором;
You worship stones and like a stork, pretend to sit in trance.
Ты поклоняешься камням и, как аист, притворяешься, что сидишь в трансе.
With your mouth you utter falsehood, and you adorn yourself with precious ornaments,
Своим ртом ты произносишь ложь, и ты украшаешь себя драгоценными украшениями,
And recite the three lines of the Gayatri three times a day.
И произносишь три строки из Гаятри три раза в день.
Around your neck is the rosary, on your forehead - the sacred mark,
На шее у тебя висят четки, на лбу есть священная метка,
And on your head is a turban, and you wear two loin cloths.
А на голове – чалма, и ты носишь две набедренные повязки.
If you knew the nature of the Lord,
Если бы ты знал нрав Господа,
Then you would find that all these beliefs and rites are in vain.
Тогда ты обнаружил бы, что все эти мнения и обряды напрасны.
Says Nanak, in good faith meditate on the Lord.
Говорит Нанак: «Добросовестно медитируй на Господа.
Without the True Guru, man finds not the way. |2|
Без Истинного Гуру, человек не находит путь».

Leaving comely raiment and beauty in this world, the man departs.
Полностью оставив одежду и красоту в этом мире, человек отсюда уходит.
Man himself obtains the fruit of his bad and good deeds.
Человек сам обретает плод своих плохих и хороших действий.
One may issue one's heart desired commands here, but he shall proceed by the narrow road hereafter.
Он может отдавать желанные его сердцу приказы здесь, но ему придётся идти по
узкой дороге в потустороннем мире.
